When a Sump Pump Makes Sense in Southern California
The classic Midwest basement scenario does not apply here. Local situations that absolutely do:
- Crawl space flooding in homes built on raised foundations. Standing water in a crawl space causes mold, attracts pests, rots framing, and damages the underside of subflooring.
- Hillside drainage on sloped lots where rainwater runs toward the house instead of away from it. Common in the hillside neighborhoods of the western Valley, Topanga, Calabasas, and parts of Ventura County.
- Properties below grade or with portions of the structure below adjacent ground level (sunken rooms, basements that do exist in some older Valley homes, half-buried garages).
- Wet weather pooling near the foundation during the heavy rain events that are becoming more frequent in Southern California.
- French drain and exterior drainage system terminations that need active pumping rather than gravity discharge.
Standing water leads to mold and rot fast. Pair a pump with water leak detection, and if damage has already happened, see our water damage restoration help or call 818-349-9000.

How to Pick the Right Sump Pump
Three variables drive the decision. We size based on all three.
Pumping Capacity (GPH)
Light residential applications need 1,500 to 2,500 gallons per hour. High-water-table situations or hillside drainage applications may need 3,500 to 5,000 GPH. Underpowered pumps run constantly and burn out. Oversized pumps short-cycle and damage themselves.
Submersible vs. Pedestal
Submersible pumps sit inside the sump pit and are quieter, more powerful, and longer-lived. Pedestal pumps sit above the pit and are easier to service but louder and shorter-lived. For new installations in the Valley, we recommend submersible in nearly every case.
Backup Power
A battery backup or water-powered backup pump runs when the primary fails or the power is out. The single most important rule of sump pumps: you need yours to work during a storm, and storms cause power outages. Backup power is not optional for serious applications.

- Licensed plumber on every install under California Contractor's License #708581.
- Properly sized pumps for your actual application, not a one-size-fits-all default.
- Code-compliant discharge that puts water where it belongs and not into a neighbor's yard.

- Annual pre-season testing offered as part of our maintenance plans.
Why Bryco
Sump pumps are simple until they fail at the worst possible moment. Getting the install right, the right pump, the right size, the right discharge, and a backup, is what separates a pump that works from one that floods your crawl space anyway.

Frequently Asked Questions About Sump Pumps
Not every home does, but more do than people think. If you have crawl space flooding, a hillside lot where water runs toward the house, an existing sump pit that came with the home, or a French drain system terminating at the foundation, the answer is usually yes. We will inspect the situation and tell you honestly whether one is needed.
A quality submersible sump pump runs 7 to 10 years on average. Heavy-use applications shorten that to 5 to 7 years. Pedestal pumps run shorter, often 3 to 5 years. Battery backup units have their own lifespan (the battery typically lasts 3 to 5 years and needs replacement on its own schedule).
Yes if your property has anything valuable to protect. Power outages happen most often during storms, which is exactly when you need the pump to run. A battery backup adds modest cost to an installation and pays for itself the first time the power goes out at 2 a.m. during a downpour.
Quarterly is a good baseline. Pour a bucket of water into the sump pit and watch the pump activate, discharge, and shut off cleanly. If the pump does not activate, the float is stuck, or the discharge sounds wrong, call us before the next rain event. We also offer annual professional testing as part of our maintenance plans.

Finished in the less than two hours. Dan was efficient and friendly which is always a pleasure and he did not mind me watching the process. Always interesting to see how things are done. I normally have a plumber that I use, but unfortunately he was out of town, so last night around 6:30 PM I called Bryco Plumbing because my toilet was clogged. To my surprise, Bryan, the owner, answered the phone himself after hours. He was extremely nice, answered all of my questions, and told me he could have someone out first thing in the morning. This morning, Joshua came to the house. He was polite, professional, efficient, and had the toilet fixed within an hour. From calling at 6:30 at night and having the owner actually answer the phone, to having someone at my house the next morning and the problem taken care of quickly, the entire experience was fantastic. I am so thrilled that I ended up calling Bryco Plumbing. I almost never leave reviews, but when a company provides this level of service, I feel like you have to pass along the praise. Bryco Plumbing definitely earned a new customer. Highly recommend!Posted on Google Paige McmillenTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. On time, courteous, fair price, and sink and tub are draining well. Simi resident thanks youPosted on Google Richard DeemTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. The technician, Dan, spent a number of hours replacing a broken, difficultly positioned anti-siphon valve and shutoff valve. Since the shutoff valve was broken, he had to turn off the main water line, which required calling out LADWP. Dan replaced the shutoff valve and elevated the new anti-siphon valve to make it easier to service. Dan was professional, friendly and worked systematically through very warm summer temperatures. Very nice work through a challenging task.Posted on Google Susan BernardTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Leak detection.
