What We Can See on a Sewer Camera Inspection
Pipe Bellies (Sags)
Tree Root Intrusion
Roots enter sewer lines through joints, small cracks, and aging fittings. On camera, they look like beards of fibrous material hanging into the pipe interior. We document where roots are entering and how severely they are restricting flow.
Foreign Objects and Blockages
Sometimes the issue is something physical: a toy flushed years ago, construction debris from a previous owner’s remodel, accumulated wipes labeled 'flushable' that are anything but. The camera locates them and we plan the removal.
Cracks and Fractures
Hairline cracks, longitudinal fractures, and circumferential breaks in the pipe. Cracks let roots and groundwater into the line and can lead to partial or full collapse if left unaddressed.
Joint Separations
Older clay and cast iron sewer laterals were built in sections joined together. Soil movement, root pressure, and time cause those joints to separate. Camera inspection shows the gaps clearly.
Partial or Full Collapse
The most serious finding. A collapsed section of sewer line cannot be lined and must be excavated and replaced. The camera tells us where the collapse is and how extensive it is.
When a Small Repair Becomes a Big Problem

When You Need a Sewer Camera Inspection
- Before buying a home in any neighborhood with mature trees or housing built before 1985. Sewer lateral replacement is one of the most expensive surprises a new homeowner can inherit, often 5 to 15 thousand dollars. A pre-purchase scope catches it before closing.
- Recurring drain clogs that come back after being cleared. The clog is a symptom. The camera shows the cause.
- Multiple drains backing up simultaneously almost always indicates a main line issue that needs diagnosis before any repair
- Before a remodel or addition that will affect the sewer line. Better to know the line's condition before pouring concrete over it.
- After major work has been done on the line to verify the repair or replacement is sound
- Before any sewer line repair quote so the repair is targeted to the actual problem, not a guess
- When buying a property in the Valley where housing stock from the 50s, 60s, and 70s commonly has clay or cast iron sewer laterals at the end of their useful life
Our Camera Inspection Process
A real inspection is more than just running a camera down the pipe. It is a documented diagnostic that you can use to make decisions.
- Access through an existing cleanout or, if none is accessible, through a strategic temporary access point
- Full-length inspection of the line from the access point to either the city main connection or the limits of the inspectable section
- Real-time video on a monitor that you can watch with us as the camera moves through the line
- Footage delivered to you in digital form, yours to keep, useful for insurance claims, real estate transactions, and any future plumbers you may work with
- Written diagnostic report summarizing what was found, with timestamps on the video for key findings
- Repair recommendations ranging from no action needed to specific repair options, with honest cost ranges

Why Sewer Scopes Matter Especially in Older Valley Neighborhoods
Mature trees in established neighborhoods like Encino, Tarzana, Studio City, Sherman Oaks, and parts of Northridge have had decades to send roots into those aging lines. A camera scope tells you whether the line still has years of life left, whether it needs lining now, or whether replacement should be in the budget.

Frequently Asked Questions About Sewer Camera Inspection
A standard residential sewer scope is one of the most cost-effective diagnostics in plumbing. The cost is a small fraction of what you would spend repairing or replacing a line based on guesswork. For real estate transactions, the inspection often saves the buyer many thousands of dollars by either negotiating repairs into the sale or walking away from a property with a failing sewer line. We give you a flat price before scheduling.
Yes, especially in the Valley. The standard home inspection does not include a sewer scope. Sewer laterals are not included in title or general inspection reports. A buyer who waives the scope and inherits a failing line is taking on a five-figure repair that could have been caught for a fraction of that cost. We schedule pre-purchase scopes regularly and work directly with your agent.
Most residential sewer scopes take 45 minutes to an hour, including setup, the actual inspection, and a walk-through of the findings with you. If access requires running the camera from the roof or pulling a toilet, it takes a bit longer. We tell you up front what is involved.
Yes. Every camera inspection we do comes with a digital copy of the footage delivered to you, typically by email or a shared link. The video is yours to keep, share with real estate agents, insurance adjusters, or other plumbers if you choose to get a second opinion on the repair plan.

Finished in the less than two hours. Dan was efficient and friendly which is always a pleasure and he did not mind me watching the process. Always interesting to see how things are done. I normally have a plumber that I use, but unfortunately he was out of town, so last night around 6:30 PM I called Bryco Plumbing because my toilet was clogged. To my surprise, Bryan, the owner, answered the phone himself after hours. He was extremely nice, answered all of my questions, and told me he could have someone out first thing in the morning. This morning, Joshua came to the house. He was polite, professional, efficient, and had the toilet fixed within an hour. From calling at 6:30 at night and having the owner actually answer the phone, to having someone at my house the next morning and the problem taken care of quickly, the entire experience was fantastic. I am so thrilled that I ended up calling Bryco Plumbing. I almost never leave reviews, but when a company provides this level of service, I feel like you have to pass along the praise. Bryco Plumbing definitely earned a new customer. Highly recommend!Posted on Google Paige McmillenTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. On time, courteous, fair price, and sink and tub are draining well. Simi resident thanks youPosted on Google Richard DeemTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. The technician, Dan, spent a number of hours replacing a broken, difficultly positioned anti-siphon valve and shutoff valve. Since the shutoff valve was broken, he had to turn off the main water line, which required calling out LADWP. Dan replaced the shutoff valve and elevated the new anti-siphon valve to make it easier to service. Dan was professional, friendly and worked systematically through very warm summer temperatures. Very nice work through a challenging task.Posted on Google Susan BernardTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Leak detection.
