Sewer Line Replacement Methods
Traditional Excavated Replacement
The classic approach. We dig a trench along the sewer line path, remove the old pipe, lay new PVC or ABS pipe at proper slope, connect to the house at one end and the city main at the other, and backfill the trench. The advantage is that the new pipe is fully visible during installation and any slope or alignment issues get corrected. The disadvantage is the surface disruption, which can include lawn, landscaping, driveway, or hardscape that needs restoration.
Trenchless Replacement (Pipe Bursting)
A modern method that replaces the sewer line without a full trench. We dig two small access pits (one at the house, one near the city connection), then pull a bursting head through the existing pipe. The head breaks the old pipe outward into the surrounding soil while simultaneously pulling new HDPE pipe into place behind it. The result is a new sewer line in the same path as the old, with only the two pit areas needing surface restoration.
Trenchless Replacement (Pipe Lining)
For lines that are damaged but not collapsed, epoxy lining (link to /epoxy-pipe-coating/) effectively creates a new pipe inside the old one. The result is a structurally sound, continuous line with no excavation at all. Lining is not technically replacement, but for the right situations it produces equivalent results without the disruption.

When Replacement Is the Right Decision
A line gets to the replacement stage for a few specific reasons.
- Multiple failure points along the same line. A line with three or four damaged sections is usually past the point where spot repairs make economic sense.
- Severe corrosion of the host pipe. Cast iron pipes corroded down to the structural minimum cannot be lined safely. The host pipe has to be intact for lining to work.
- Complete or partial collapse. A collapsed section cannot be lined. It has to be excavated and replaced (or pipe-bursted as part of a full replacement).
- Recurring backups despite previous repairs. If the line has been snaked, jetted, root-treated, and spot-repaired and the problems keep returning, the math points to replacement.
- Age and material. Vitrified clay sewer laterals from the 1950s and 60s have outlived their expected service life in many Valley homes. Orangeburg pipe (a tar-paper composite used in some 1940s-60s installations) was problematic from day one and is now well past its life.
How to Choose Between Methods
The right method depends on three things: pipe condition, what is on the surface above the line, and budget.
- Pipe collapsed or severely damaged at multiple points: Pipe bursting (trenchless) or traditional excavation. Lining is not an option.
- Pipe damaged but largely intact: Epoxy lining is the least disruptive option.
- Sewer line runs under a driveway or hardscape: Trenchless (either bursting or lining) saves the surface and can be dramatically cheaper than traditional excavation followed by hardscape restoration.
- Sewer line runs through open lawn with easy access: Traditional excavation may be the most cost-effective option, especially if pipe slope or alignment needs correction.
- Pipe has bellies (sags): Trenchless methods preserve the existing geometry, so they will not fix slope issues. Traditional excavation with re-bedding is needed.

Frequently Asked Questions About Sewer Line Replacement
Trenchless pipe bursting on a typical residential lateral takes one to two days. Traditional excavated replacement takes two to five days depending on length, depth, and surface restoration needs. Epoxy lining typically completes in a single day. We give you a written timeline before starting and update you immediately if anything during the work changes the schedule.
Cost varies based on method, length, depth, and surface conditions. Trenchless pipe bursting often comes in lower than traditional excavation once you factor in surface restoration. Lining is often the lowest-cost option when it is applicable. We give you written estimates for the viable methods so you can compare apples to apples.
Yes. Sewer lateral replacement requires permits in nearly every California jurisdiction, including all areas we serve. The permit ensures the work meets code, the connections are inspected, and the line is properly tied into the city sewer system. Bryco pulls the permit and schedules the inspector as part of every replacement job.
It depends on the method. Traditional excavation requires opening a trench along the line path. Trenchless pipe bursting requires only two small pit areas. Epoxy lining requires no surface excavation in most cases. We will walk you through the visual impact of each option before you decide.
