How to Extend the Life of Your Water Heater Pros Los Angeles
A conventional tank water heater will last about ten years! But a few maintenance tips will go a long way in prolonging the life of your unit, especially if it’s relatively new.
- CLEAN OR FLUSH THE WATER TANK ONCE A YEAR: Unless you have a newer model tank that’s self-cleaning, flushing the tank out annually can help to prevent the buildup of sediment and maintain your tank. Be sure to check the manufacturer’s instructions for draining your water heater.
- REPLACE THE ANODE ROD IF IT’S BADLY CORRODED: An anode rod is a metal rod that’s installed inside your water heater tank. It’s designed to attract the little corrosive elements in water, thereby sacrificing itself to save the water heater’s steel tank. When the anode rod succumbs to corrosion, water will rapidly corrode inside your tank and shorten its life. Inspect the rod annually and have it replaced every three to five years to extend the life of your water heater.
- CHECK THE PRESSURE RELEASE VALVE: Since heated water expands, water pressures spike during heating cycles. When the pressure gets too high, the pressure release valve lets out a little excess water to prevent tank ruptures. It’s good to check if you have a working valve every three to four months.
